Geology Introduction

geologyGeology is the study of the earth’s physical structure, history and processes.  One prime area of study that geologists often research has to do with how the Earth has changed over time.  Geologists try to understand the history of the planet Earth.  The more they can understand the history of the Earth, the more they can learn about what could potentially happen in the future.

Many of the processes of the Earth that are studied by geologists include earthquakes, landslides, volcanoes, floods and other hazardous events.  The more that the geologists study these processes, the better they are able to understand them.  This is how we are able to know so much about fault lines and volcanoes throughout the land.  If they can map areas that have had problems before, they will have a better understanding about the future of the development of the land.

Geologists also study the materials of the earth.  The materials on the Earth are used every day for various reasons.  For instance, people use oil, metal, and water daily.  There are also rocks that have certain metals that can be used to produce certain special tools that are used in manufacturing.  Throughout the history of the Earth, only the most basic elements were used to manufacture other objects.  Without geology to help us understand the contents and materials found on Earth, we wouldn’t be able to do that.

Finally, geologists also study the history of the Earth.  This includes the history of climate change and other historical information.  Most geologists want to learn more about climate change to see what could be in store in the future.  The more we study these changes, the more prepared we will be down the road.  Without the study of the Earth, we wouldn’t really be able to get very far with anything.

Think about it, even the most intricate technologies use the most basic elemental blocks found on the Earth.  They have just been processed and used to create other things, which are used to create our technology.  Our world is ever changing, but some things stay the same.

As you can see, there is a whole lot that goes into geology.  If you are interested in learning more about geology, you really should take some time to read up on it.  It is not something that is only studied by career geologists.  It can be studied by anyone that has a desire to learn about it.  The more you learn, the more you will be able to see the bigger picture and how things work together to create an environment that is stable for us to live and thrive as human beings.  Take some time to study geology, either for your career or for a hobby!
